First edition, quarto, the work translated from the French by John Sanford; dedicated to James I and bound in full contemporary gilt-decorated sheep featuring James's thistle emblem on both boards; all edges gilt; beautifully preserved; lacking ties but otherwise a lovely copy; errors in the text neatly corrected in a contemporary hand; ex libris Sir Thomas Phillipps sold in 1973 at Sotheby's; the Pirie copy, with bookplate inside front board; purchased in that sale in 2015; 8 3/8 x 5 7/8 in.
